DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP:    This evidence-based workshop is designed to help parents and caregivers promote their young child’s social and emotional development and to better understand young children’s challenging behaviors. Parents and caregivers will learn how to use positive approaches to improve their interactions with their child; help children learn appropriate behavior; and to build their child’s confidence and self-esteem. Thereby, preparing children for successful early learning experiences. Each of the six sessions in this workshop presents a new topic. Parents will learn how to react in different situations through role playing, interactive learning strategies, and videos.

Schedule:

SESSION 1/2 – Making a Connection and Making It Happen!   – March 3, 2021 – 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Identify the importance of building positive relationships with children. Discuss the “power” of using positive comments and encouragement with children.

Understand how play can be a powerful parenting practice. Learn ways to help children develop friendship skills. Link building relationships, using positive comments/encouragement, and play to children’s behavior.

SESSION 3 – Why Do They Do What They Do?  – March 5, 2021 – 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Examine why children do what they do. Practice ways to determine the meaning of behavior. Understand how to make expectations clear for children. Understand effective ways to develop and teach household rules.

SESSION 4 – Teach Me What to Do! – March 10, 2021 – 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Define the concept of emotional vocabulary. Identify feeling words and identify effective ways to teach feeling vocabulary. Demonstrate the use of books to support emotional vocabulary and social-emotional development.

Identify how the turtle technique can be used to cope with feelings of anger and disappointment. Learn how to teach problem-solving skills.

SESSION 5/6 – Facing the Challenge – March 17, 2021 – 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Examine specific strategies that can be used to promote positive adult and child behavior in home and community settings.

Identify that problem behavior has meaning. Identify the meaning of behavior by examining what happens before and after the problem behavior. Identify the three parts of a behavior plan:  prevention, new skills to teach, and new responses.
