Family Connection SC is a Lifespan Respite partner with the South Carolina Respite Coalition and the Lt. Governor’s Office on Aging. The shared vision of these 3 organizations is that family caregivers across the lifespan will understand the benefit and necessity of regular breaks, aka Respite, will access respite funds and other respite resources, and will form a “Circle of Support” around themselves which will enable them to enjoy Respite on a routine basis.
When you have a family member with a disability or special need, for whom you are the primary caregiver, it is difficult to take a break from your caregiver role. The “time off or break” that you need is Respite. The care you arrange for your loved one while you are away is Respite Care. No one can arrange Respite or Respite Care for you because you will not take time off unless you know that excellent care is being provided in your absence and because time off means different things to different people.
Recipients of a Family Caregiver Respite Voucher arrange their own time off which includes deciding when, where & how they will take a break AND who will care for their loved one while they are away. Respite can be a few hours, a few days, or even longer, depending on the situation.
