Morning Session- Creating and Remediating Accessible Documents and Presentations for students who are Blind or Visually Impaired

Presented by: Marty McKenzie & Dr. Tina Herzberg

This training offers a deep examination of the concepts involved in creating and remediating documents with accessibility in mind.  We will explore the fundamentals of accessible document structure, paying special attention to the use of headings in Microsoft Word and reading order in Microsoft PowerPoint.  We will also briefly discuss the use of plain language for students with multiple disabilities and explore in depth strategies for creating accessible images.

After completing this training, attendees will be able to

• Discuss the importance of document accessibility for students who are blind or visually impaired

• Identify basic elements of document accessibility and utilize them correctly

• Distinguish between alternative text and image descriptions

• Recognize decorative verses essential images

• Remediate a basic inaccessible Microsoft Word document

• Identify reading order issues in Microsoft PowerPoint

• Build a basic accessible PowerPoint presentation

• Recognize a scanned or built PDF and discuss the accessibility advantages and challenges of both

Afternoon Session- Technical Knowledge for Navigation

Presented by Stephanie Brown, M.Ed., TVI and COMS

The professionals will learn about apps related to orientation and mobility as well as navigation. Participants will also learn strategies for using the apps in a lesson. The participants will also be exposed to assistive technology devices that apply to navigating their environments.

Participants will:

  • Learn about how access technology applies to a learner with low vision, learner with blindness, and a learner with multiple disabilities.
  • Download and practice using the apps and learn what they have to offer.
  • Be given scenarios and give a list of apps or access technology that can apply to the student.
