Family Connection is proud to have partnered with South Carolina Partnership of Disability Organizations (@scpdo) for the 37th Annual Disability Advocacy Day today at the SC State House.

This was a chance to raise our voices and advocate for the rights and services of people with disabilities. ❤️

👏 In January, The Town of Surfside Beach (@thefamilybeach) marked its 10th anniversary of being the first city in South Carolina and one of the first in the nation to earn Autism-Friendly Certification, a history-making milestone that continues to positively impact residents, visitors and businesses across the entire Grand Strand.

Autism Friendly Certification, led locally through Champion Autism Network (CAN), requires staff training, accommodations and policy changes designed to create inclusive environments. Surfside Beach works closely with CAN, local businesses, first responders and tourism partners to implement autism-friendly practices throughout the town.

We're so excited to to have our keynote speaker for The Hopes and Dreams Conference 2026, Dr. Meghan Burke, Ph.D., BCBA-D. 💙💛💚

Dr. Meghan Burke is a professor of special education at Peabody College at Vanderbilt University. Her research interests include family-professional partnerships, families of individuals with disabilities, and disability policy.

Her research examines how families advocate for services for their family members with disabilities. She also conducts research examining how siblings of individuals with disabilities transition to caregiving roles.

In addition, Dr. Burke has a child with autism and a brother with Down syndrome. Prior to graduate school, Dr. Burke worked at a Parent Training and Information Center and she was a special education teacher in Metro Nashville Public Schools.
