Silly, smart, curious, loving—and just a little sneaky—that’s Greyson! While there is a twinkle in his eye when he is about to do something he knows he shouldn’t, he is a sweet soul with a big heart. People are drawn to his spirit, and he has the ability to connect with others without saying a word.
Diagnosed with Q22.11 deletion syndrome and autism, Greyson is mostly nonverbal but communicates in his own amazing ways—through gestures, his device, and his big personality. Therapy has been lifechanging for him. He is making tremendous progress with applied behavioral analysis and occupational therapies. From saying “Mommy” to giving hugs and making eye contact, every milestone is important and worth celebrating. He works hard for things that come easily to many others, and he always keeps trying.
“It is impossible not to be inspired by the kind of grit that Grey-Grey demonstrates during therapy and in everyday life” says his mom, Emily. “The first time he used his device to say “I love you” on his own—we will never forget that. We cried. Another moment that sticks with us is watching him zip down the street on his scooter with his big brother cheering him on.”
When it is time for fun, Greyson loves tickles and cuddles, playing hide-and-seek, sitting down for a board game, or watching videos about cars and trains. Playing with the more than 100 cars he owns is even better. Other favorite activities include memory games, swimming, scooter rides, and playing with his big brother or hanging out with Milly the dog and Stache the cat.
Greyson’s family says he changed everything for them. He reminds them daily to slow down and just be. As they see it, “Greyson is full of love, humor, and strength. The world does not always make space for Greyson’s pace, and he may not use words like we do, but he has a lot to say, and his voice deserves to be heard.”
