Grayson is often described as a cool little dude. He is an easygoing introvert who loves being at home and out in nature. Music is the backdrop to his life… but only if he is the DJ! Grayson loves things that spin, balls, cars and racetracks, music, and videos with special effects. He especially enjoys water play, learning new things, and throwing rocks into lakes and streams.
For the first 18 months of his life, Grayson appeared to be developing typically until language didn’t come as excepted and his play looked more like stimming. His parents sought early intervention services, and at five years old, he was diagnosed with autism. In his earlier years, Grayson had to overcome a multitude of sensory challenges. The world was simply too loud. Grayson is homeschooled, forest-schooled, world-schooled, and unschooled. He goes on adventures and intentionally socializes so he can experience his community and the world around him. He deeply enjoys his life.
Grayson’s parents gave him time, access to opportunities, and support, and as a result, he is flourishing. With time and exposure, his sensory challenges have become more manageable. His parents communicate without words to meet his needs, and they work on activities of daily living every day.
Now, Grayson can take in his surroundings, participate in experiences, observe other children, and give things a chance. This is extremely special for his parents. His mom, Valisa, shares “Grayson is a loving child who wants to communicate. He may not always acknowledge people because of his disability. He’s a big kid and may come across as a little intimidating, but he’s truly a gentle giant. He simple enjoys being immersed in his music.”
Every day, parents of children with disabilities, chronic health conditions, and mental health concerns are faced with the difficulty of trying to understand and access much needed services for their child or loved one. Family Connection of SC is a one stop, parent-led organization designed to meet the individualized needs of families.
