Asher is very playful and silly. He loves Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and saying “oh toodles,” along with popping bubbles, nursery rhymes and singing. Playing on the playground is one of his favorite things.
Asher has been in BabyNet early intervention since he was 13 months old. He was diagnosed with autism at age three, in part due to an initial evaluation for PreK. The diagnosis has helped his family learn ways to help him and find the proper therapies to help him advance.
As he gets older, it’s been challenging to explain to others that he may not respond when they are talking to him. It’s hard not being able to do certain things due to sensory overloads like fireworks on the Fourth of July. Seeing him struggle to communicate or play with other children his age and not knowing what he may want or need is hard on his family.
Asher is learning to play with others in his own way. He uses a communication board to demonstrate wants and needs. Therapy is helping him reach so many goals and milestones.
His family is so proud to see Asher able to play alongside other children without being in distress. He’s riding the bus to school and getting on and off by himself. Things that may seem simple to others are huge milestones for Asher – like learning how to get dressed, being able to count to 20 and sing his ABCs.
Asher doesn’t give up easily – he is resilient and has a bright future.
His family hopes that Asher continues to be resilient and chase his dreams in whatever he is passionate about. They hope the world allows him to be himself and become more understanding of individuals with autism.
